Montemercurio is a forward-thinking winery in Montepulciano, Tuscany. It is run today by Marco Anselmi, who is the third generation at the winery.
Montemercurio has its roots in the early 60s, when Grandfather Damo planted the first vine without knowing that he had created the basis for more than just ordinary wine. The Anselmi family continued the small vineyard of approx. 3 ha when Damo passed away and since then they developed Montemercurio into more than Damo ever imagined; they started producing Vino Nobile, which tells the story of Montepulciano and its soil.
In the early 2000s, another seven hectares of vineyards were planted - primarily Sangiovese and also Merlot in the lower part of the terrain, as well as small amounts of Carbernet Sauvignon and Canaiolo. Here we also find the grapes for Montemercurio's top wine Vino Nobile DOCG "Damo", dedicated to the memory of Damo who started this dream, which today is a reality.
The vineyards are planted at an altitude of about 450 meters above sea level and with a favorable south-west facing location on fertile soil, combined with a mild climate, Montemercurio gets a high yield of high quality.
Montemercurio's philosophy is to preserve all the goodness found in the hills around Montepulciano in their wines, by not masking the taste and the characteristic aromas. They stick to the good taste of the fruit, which is processed in accordance with the old traditions.
Great attention is paid to all stages of production. The grapes are harvested by hand and sorted manually, and fermented and aged in traditional Tuscan barrels to bring out all the nuances and aromas in the wine.
Appeal to tradition, care in production and respect for the terroir; these are the ingredients that create a unique wine like Montemercurio.
The first vintage with the Montemercurio name on the bottles is 2007, and Marco really manages to make quality wine for the money.
