Morellino di Scansano Riserva DOCG is a higher quality classification for red wine produced in the Tuscan area of Scansano in Italy. To achieve this designation, the wines must meet a number of strict requirements regarding grape varieties, soil conditions, production techniques and vinification.
Grape variety: The requirement for grape variety is that the wine must be made from at least 85% Sangiovese grapes, with the possibility of up to 15% addition of other local grape varieties.
Alcohol: The wines must have a minimum alcohol percentage of 13%.
Soil: Must be in the area of Scansano and the vines must be planted for at least three years to be used in the production of Morellino di Scansano Riserva DOCG.
Vinification: Must take place according to certain techniques, including fermentation at a controlled temperature and a minimum of 6 months of maturation in wooden barrels. To obtain the Riserva designation, the wine must have matured for at least 2 years, of which a minimum of 6 months in wood.
Control: The wine must undergo an extensive quality test that includes both physical and sensory analyzes before it can be awarded the Morellino di Scansano Riserva DOCG designation.
