Chateauneuf-du-Pape has a unique terroir that differs in a number of ways from other terroirs in the Rhone. The soil consists of a thick layer of gravel, which is packed with different compositions of lime, marl or sand, depending on the location. On the surface are the famous "galets", large pebbles that store heat during the day and release it back to the vines during the night. The climate is hot and dry with many hours of sunshine, and the soil is so barren that the vines have to root deep to get the water they need for life.
The Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation is among France's oldest wine regions, and the strict production requirements in the area have served as a prototype for the French "Appellation Contrôlèe" system.
Domaine Usseglio is a 3-generation family estate of Italian origin. Located right in the heart of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation.
Francis Usseglio came from Italy in 1931, where he settled in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. He planted his vines and started his own production; Terres Blanches.
In 1963, his son Raymond took over, accompanied by his wife Danielle, and together they created Domaine Usseglio Raymond.
Since 1999, it is their son who has taken over the legacy of cultivating and developing the winery Domaine Usseglio Raymond & Fils.
The domaine is certified organic (ECOCERT) and biodynamic agriculture. It is absolutely essential for them to preserve and respect the balance of the natural terroir and thus of their vines.
They strive to obtain the best quality of grapes, thereby intervening as little and as much as possible during vinification and ripening. The domain therefore works with a biodynamic cultivation method that requires a lot of observation and specific care.
We work with care in pure respect for grape varieties and terroir.
