Carmenere is a red grape variety originally from Bordeaux in France. It became widespread in Chile in the 19th century, where it was grown as part of a wide variety of Bordeaux grapes. Due to its close resemblance to other grape varieties, Carmenere was actually mistaken for Merlot for many years before it was rediscovered in Chile in the 1990s.
