The Antinori family has several vineyards in both Italy and North and South America.
Castello della Sala, a majestic medieval castle in Umbria close to Tuscany and 18 km from Orvieto, covers 600 hectares, including 200 hectares of vineyards.
The castle was built in 1350 by Angelo Monaldeschi della Vipera. It has a history of family feuds and power struggles, especially in the 14th century. After a troubled period, peace was made with a marriage in the 15th century.
The vineyards, located at an altitude of 220-470 metres, grow both traditional and international grape varieties, including Procanico, Grechetto, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
The area is ideal for white grape varieties, but Pinot Noir also thrives here in clay and calcareous soil.
The wine cellar at Castello della Sala, dating back to the 16th century, combines modern techniques with historical methods, where portions of Cervaro della Sala and Pinot Nero della Sala mature in French oak barrels under the castle's ancient walls.
